HEMP The Comeback
An excellent synopsis of the unfortunate decisions that led to the demonization of a very useful plant.
There are urban legends claiming that the first pair of Levi's jeans were made of hemp, despite being made from cotton by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. This misinformation was likely spread by Jack Herer. But guess what …
Levi’s made from Hemp
Levi's has been incorporating hemp into its denim production as part of its sustainability efforts. In 2019, Levi's introduced a collection featuring jeans made from a blend of 70% cotton and 30% hemp. The company has developed a process called "cottonization" to soften the hemp fibers, making them feel almost indistinguishable from cotton. This process uses very little energy and chemical processing, reducing the environmental impact.
Levi's aims to increase the use of hemp in its products, with plans to produce garments made entirely from cottonized hemp within five years. As of 2024, Levi's was working to incorporate more hemp into its fashion collections, recognizing it as one of the most sustainable materials for clothing. Hemp requires less water and fewer pesticides than traditional cotton, making it an environmentally friendly alternative. Maybe these will last longer !
